Impact Crack on Kayak
« on: March 20, 2015, 08:45:05 AM »
Ja, eventually it happened !!!!!!!!!

All my nose dives when beaching paid it's toll.
Last Sundays Dumper was the last straw and my faithful Ski couldn't take it any more.
 :'( :'( :'(

I would appreciate good advice on fixing this crack in my hull.

Question: must I drill the ends ?
Must I V-grind ?
Must I use chopped or weaved fiberglass?

my minor experience with glass...chopped strand is stronger than woven mat.

your issues there are difficult to see, but a good idea to clean out the groove/crack, remove all broken glass work, sand clean and wipe clean with acetone before applying your glass mix. Apply the mix with a brush and afterward work the chopped strand into the crack. After dry time is over file or sandpaper smooth.

use surf super blue washing powder (dry) and rub on your hands, if they are dirty with dry or sticky glass fibre ~ wash off with water afterwards, theres no need for acetone to clean your hands.

Hi Psy

Thanks for the valued input.

I became very impatient and started the job on my limited experience.
Logic also told me that chopped fiber will be stronger.

Found a fantastic product "Fibral" which is a chopped fiber paste.
Did a deep grind and filled with this magic stuff 3 x and were very happy with the result.

On top of that I used woven mat x 2 layers.

I am quite happy that the fix is good
